Overview

Surf Abu Dhabi opened in October 2024 on Hudayriyat Island, about 15 minutes from Downtown Abu Dhabi. It is built around Kelly Slater Wave Company technology, the first KSWC installation outside Lemoore, California, and its pool is filled with saltwater rather than fresh water. At 690 meters long it is currently the longest artificial wave pool in the world, and the WSL added it as a Championship Tour stop for 2025.

The Wave

The pool runs a W-shaped reef floor and four named settings. Beach Break is a knee-high whitewash zone for up to eight first-timers on foam boards, waves arriving every 3 to 5 minutes. Cocoa Beach (named after Kelly Slater's hometown) produces waist-to-chest-high, slow-paced walls with easy takeoffs, designed for people learning to link turns on a full wave face. Point Break steps it up to shoulder-to-head-high with faster speed, long clean open faces, and softer barrel sections, suited to intermediates working on connecting maneuvers. Kelly's Wave is the top setting: up to 8 to 10 feet, both lefts and rights, customizable barrel shape, and the speed and power you would expect from the Lemoore original, reportedly with slightly longer ride length. A session on the main wave runs up to a minute. The pool is filled with 80 million liters of saltwater, which is unusual for wave pools and does change the feel slightly relative to freshwater facilities.

Best For

Intermediate and advanced surfers who want guaranteed, uncrowded time on a machine-perfect wave and can absorb the cost. The Beach Break and Cocoa Beach settings are genuinely accessible for beginners, but at AED 1,800 for 60 minutes and 6 to 8 waves, it is a steep first lesson. If you are travelling through Abu Dhabi or Dubai for work and want one proper surf session, this delivers. It is not the right call for someone just trying surfing for the first time who could find a cheaper intro elsewhere.

Pricing

Open Surf Beginner (Beach Break or Cocoa Beach setting): AED 1,800 (roughly $490) for 60 minutes, 6 to 8 waves per surfer. Open Surf Intermediate or Advanced (Point Break or Kelly's Wave): AED 3,500 (roughly $950) for 90 minutes. The session holds a maximum of 4 surfers in the main pool, and each surfer is guaranteed approximately 6 waves, with additional rides possible if others fall off. That works out to around $160 per wave on the advanced setting, among the highest per-wave costs of any public wave pool globally. Private 1-on-1 Lesson: AED 2,000 (roughly $545) for 90 minutes including 12 waves. Surf Trip (private session, up to 6 guests): AED 15,000 (roughly $4,085) for 90 minutes with 24 waves and full Surf Club access. On Saturdays, a community Surf Social event offers surfing plus food and soft drinks from AED 650, which is the lowest confirmed price point for any wave session at the facility. There are no off-peak discounts confirmed from available sources.

Planning

Book well ahead, especially for Kelly's Wave or Point Break sessions during the cooler months (October through April) and around any WSL events. Parking is free on site. From Downtown Abu Dhabi it is about 15 minutes by car; from Dubai Marina expect 60 minutes, and from Dubai International Airport roughly 90 minutes via the E11. You can book a taxi, Uber, or Careem directly to Hudayriyat Island. Boards, rashguards, and gear are available to rent or buy in the on-site retail shop, so you do not need to travel with equipment. The Nalu Surf Club and Ilios Beach Club are both on site for food and drinks before or after. If you want a lower-cost entry, the Saturday Surf Social is the most affordable confirmed option. Sunscreen and sun protection are critical: the exposed poolside has little shade.

Verdict

If you are a capable surfer visiting the UAE and the AED 3,500 price is within reach, the wave is genuinely exceptional and the uncrowded 4-person cap makes the time in the water feel valuable. For most people the per-wave cost is simply too high to justify unless it is a trip bucket-list item.
